Ayurveda teaches that oral health is one of the most important factors in overall health and well-being. Here's why.
Digestion begins in the mouth, and our digestion is to be nurtured and guarded for optimal health. Using mouth oil, especially in conjunction with tongue scraping helps cleanse and detoxify the oral cavity by removing any tongue coating we accumulate overnight. The coating represents imbalances in our health and should be accessed for corrective actions at the root level, but at the very least we need to remove it each morning.
A clean tongue and oral cavity allow us to experience the 5 food tastes properly. According to Ayurveda, it is essential to have all of the tastes in the proper ratio to balance our bodies and minds. With a toxic coating on our tongue that cannot be removed with a toothbrush, we are unable to properly receive and distinguish the tastes of our food.
Scraping and mouth oil together help to remove and eliminate harmful oral bacteria which naturally results in fresher breath. It also stimulates our internal organs, which are mapped on our tongue! This is another key feature for digestive health.
The use of sesame oil is nourishing and soothing for oral tissues. It's most often the recommended oil for oral care. Ayurveda also recommends taking a small amount of sesame seeds and chewing on them for benefits in part due to their mineral ratio and to strengthen the teeth.
Part of the magic of Ayurvedic oral health is specific tastes that oral health products should include to be effective. These are the bitter and astringent tastes. These herbs are naturally antibacterial and help to thin saliva, both of which are necessary for best oral health. Our oil formula is built using oils with these tastes, and we have included essential oils to enhance this action and refresh the mouth and breath.
